New evidence photography certification raises and sets necessary industry standards
ATLANTA – There’s a new certification in town, and it sets fresh standards for reputable evidence photographers. The Evidence Photographers International Council (EPIC) put this change in motion when it launched the Evidence Photographer Certification (EPC).
After nearly a year of research with a team of leading experts in the industry (including the FBI, the secret service, educators and crime scene specialists) and the backing of the Photographic Certification Commission, the EPC is ready to set the guidelines and standards needed in this ever-changing industry.
“The new certification is not just a piece of paper, it will become a part of your reputation, increasing others’ trust in your abilities,” stated Claire Werner, EPIC’s association manager.
The EPC is a unique certification for evidence photographers. Not only is every test answer fully referenced, it is also presented through hands-on education by a well-respected evidence photography professional. In addition, this certification requires an image submission consisting of a series of specific images with precise set-up and equipment requirements.
“I believe it will be inevitable that all evidence photographers be certified,” comments “Ted” Robinson, Professor of Forensic Sciences at GeorgeWashingtonUniversity. “The Evidence Photographer Certification is striving to set that standard in this industry." Ted is also the author of Crime Scene Photography and a member of the Evidence Photographer Certification Committee.
The EPC covers the essential qualities needed in a professional evidence photographer. With it, credibility can only rise.
The Evidence Photographers International Council (EPIC) was founded in 1968 as a non-profit educational and scientific organization with the primary purpose of advancing forensic photography in civil evidence and law enforcement. EPIC merged under the Alliance of Visual Artists (AVA) in May 2007. AVA has been educating photographers for over 128 years through the Professional Photographers of America (www.ppa.com).
